She made the presentation under the auspices of the Pagya Wo Ho Foundation which she established to promote development activities in the traditional area.

The foundation would also assist in the promotion of education of boys and girls through mentorship and healthy competitions.

Some of the items, particularly the medicated lenses, were obtained from the Het Huis Eye Wish Optical Company of Zeist in the Netherlands for distribution to people with eye problems.

Presentation

Presenting the items to the hospital, Nana Kwartemaa said following a promise she made during her installation, she would come up with a number of programmes under the foundation to assist in the development of the  traditional area.

She stated that there was the need for the creation of a platform to improve the welfare of women and children of the Bechem Traditional Area.

Nana Kwartemaa commended staff of the Bechem Government Hospital for their dedication and urged them to work hard to address the healthcare needs of the people in the area.

Dr Agyei Darko

Receiving the items, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Agyei Darko, thanked Nana Kwartemaa for the gesture and appealed to other organisations to come to the aid of the hospital.

He expressed concern over the delay in the release of money owed the hospital by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

According to Dr Darko, the hospital was facing financial challenges because the NHIA had not reimbursed it for the past eight months (from August 2015 to March 2016).

“In spite of this, we are still expected to serve people who are registered with the NHIA who form about 98 per cent of clients of the hospital,” he said

Dr Darko said it had become difficult for the hospital to go to its suppliers for more supplies as a result of non-payment of their accumulated debts.
