At an introductory workshop in Cape Coast to register and categorise building design technicians, technologists and draughtsmen in the country towards licensure, the Registrar of the ARC, Arc. Stella N.D. Arthiabah, advised building design technicians to register with the council or cease operations.

She said all building design technicians, technologists and draughtsmen should contact the ARC office in Accra for registration guidelines.

The workshop was organised by the National Board of Control for Building Design Technicians & Draughtsmen, under the auspices of the ARC and the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing.

Mrs Arthiabah noted that building technicians played a significant role in the development of every nation. She added that a single error on their part could create serious problems that might be difficult to correct.

She recounted the formation of the board of control as the government’s response to the call by key industry players and the public, such as the Association of Building Technicians (ABT) and the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA), to ensure professionalism in the building and construction industry by extending an arm of regulation over technicians in the industry.

“With the help of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the board has been set up with the aim of ensuring professionalism in the delivery of technical services within the built environment and the creation of a safe and sustainable built environment for all,” she said.

The lead facilitator of the workshop, Arc. Robert Fraikue, Principal Assistant Registrar of the ARC, who spoke to the press in an interview, observed the commitment and readiness of the participants to comply with and go along with whatever modalities the registration process entailed for them to pursue.

A member of the national board of control, Mr Buhari L. Armata, who is also an executive member of the Association of Building Design Technicians, was upbeat about the entire registration process, reiterating that the board had come to stay to regulate the profession.
