CODEC postpones march against xenophobic attacks

The Coalition for the Defence of Equal Citizenship (CODEC) has postponed indefinitely, its planned peace march that was scheduled

The very gory killings of foreign nationals in the rainbow nation which has sparked worlwide condemnation, has been largely blamed on a statement made by the Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini for foreigners to be sent home for being the cause of rising crime.

In a statement released to the media, CODEC said it had decided to hold on with the march, to allow current diplomatic efforts by Ghanaian and South African government officials to resolve the situation, to work.

“Although we still find the current xenophobic attacks in South Africa to be quite reprehensible, contrary to the dictates of international law and a gross violation of human rights; we have noticed some diplomatic efforts by Ghanaian government officials working with their South African counterparts to resolve the current situation. We will therefore want to give that diplomatic effort the chance to yield the result we are all working towards,” the statement said.

The coalition, however, said that it would be watching and assessing the situation from time to time, and would organise and coordinate as many Ghanaians as may be willing to hit the streets and demonstrate their displeasure, if the situation was not resolved in South Africa.

CODEC is a social movement that believes in the protection of democratic rights as stipulated by international conventions and protocols.
