Curses take centre stage at KMA elections

To settle the deadlock in the election of who becomes the Presiding Member for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), some supporters of one of the two candidates for the position, Nana Kofi Senya, have resorted to the invocation of curses to compel members of the assembly to vote for their choice.

Even their own preferred candidate, Nana Senya was not left out of the curse as he had been warned that he and his immediate family members would join their ancestors if he dared step down for his competitor.

They also asked the gods to slay assembly members who would be at the voting venue but will abstain themselves from the voting.

Interestingly, those who would try to appease the gods and overturn the curses have also been added to the curse.

The cursing spree was led by Mr Akwasi Boadi and some supporters of Nana Kofi Senya, mostly New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathisers.

They used a bottle of Aromatic Schnapps and seven fresh eggs produced by local fowl, invoked the curses of chief deities namely: Antoa Nyamaa, Akonedi and Kyinaman to instantly kill any assembly member who will vote for the other candidate, Adumhene, Baffuor Agyei Kesse IV.

Speaking to The Mirror, Mr Akwasi Boadi, who led the team to invoke the curses, said most of the newly elected assembly members used the NPP name in campaigning and winning the seats although the assembly election was apolitical.

He said prior to the district assembly elections, the aspiring assembly members promised to support any person aspiring to be the presiding member whose sympathies was towards the NPP, but, was surprised to hear that some of these people have gone back on their word and had voted against Nana Kofi Senya.

Divine Intervention
Sources close to some of the assembly members indicated that they had started seeking the intervention of their pastors for God’s divine intervention with others resorting to the magic men to help them possibly ward off such curses.

Venue
Last week Thursday, during the training for newly sworn-in assembly members of the KMA, the three assembly members, appeared barechested, barefooted and with red bands, started pouring out the schnapps and breaking the seven eggs on the ground to invoke the deities on their colleagues.
People standing by were so scared at the scene that some took to their heels, while others who mustered courage to watch just kept their distance.

Voting
Nana Kofi Senya, a known NPP activist and a sworn rival of the KMA Chief Executive, Mr Kojo Bonsu, is notoriously known to have initiated several foiled impeachment processes against the chief executive.

At the first voting which took place after the inauguration of the assembly, Nana Kofi Senya and Baffuor Kesse emerged the two candidates with the highest votes among the five contestants.

During the second voting on the same day, Nana Kofi Senya had 68 votes, while his closest contender secured 65, and because none of them had the required two-thirds majority, the election was postponed to October 16, 2015.

On the postponed date, Mr Baffuor Kesse upped his game and moved to 74 votes, while Nana Kofi Senya’s votes dropped to 59 and this prompted calls for cool heads to prevail.

A government appointee, Mr Francis Dodovi’s, intervention for Nana Senya to step down was met with vehemence from the supporters of Nana Senya.
The next election will take place on November 16, 2015.
