The three-week training programme, held at the Kofi Annan International Peace Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, took the participants through security, logistics and civil-military coordination in disaster operations.

They also learnt about effective ways of dealing with Ebola situations and other epidemics.

The programme, the seventh in the series, was organised by the West African Disaster Preparedness Initiative in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and sponsored by the United States Africa Command.

Cooperation

The National Coordinator of NADMO, Brigadier General Fancis Vib-Sanziri, said the programme would strengthen the capabilities of the participants and enhance regional cooperation in disaster management.

“The programme was packaged to enable the disaster management practitioners to better deal with emergency situations,” he said.
Brigadier General Vib-Sanziri called for closer collaboration among countries within the sub-region on disaster management.

“If the collaboration is working, we should be in a better position to tackle disaster situations,” he said.

Disaster prevention
The immediate past National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, tasked African leaders to allocate sufficient resources for emergency response operations.

Mr Portuphy said it was also crucial for Africa to have a stand-by emergency response team to attend to disaster situations in the region.

The Deputy Commandant of the KAIPTC, Air Commodore Julius Sefadzi Kofi Dzamfe, urged the participants to use their knowledge towards strengthening disaster management in their respective countries.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Liberia, Mr Morris M Dukuly, said the training would enhance the preparedness of Liberia in dealing with Ebola.

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria, Mr Mohammad Sani Sidi, called for a sustained cooperation through periodic joint exercises to build synergy and improve performance in disaster preparedness and management.
