Draw your peers to Christ — Archbishop Sarpong

The Emeritus Archbishop of the Kumasi Archdiocese, Most Rev. Peter Akwasi Sarpong, has challenged the youth, particularly Catholics, to use their influence on their peers to draw them to Christ.

He said many of the youth were being led astray by their peers, so he urged them to use their influence positively instead of using it to lead their peers to destruction.

He asked the youth to be evangelisers of their peers and draw them closer to Christ.

Most Rev. Sarpong said this in a homily he delivered at the thanksgiving mass of the 16th Biennial national delegates congress of the Catholic Organisation for Social and Religious Advancement (COSRA).

It was on the theme: “For the Spirit God has given us is not a Spirit of timidity” (Timothy 1:7) and was held from July 17 - 20, 2014.

The prelate decried the dwindling number of Catholics in the country, particularly the rate at which the youth were leaving the church for other churches.

Most Rev. Sarpong said instead of looking for salvation of their souls, many Christians were in search of miracles and as such moved from one church to another.

Selfish expectations

He said about 85 per cent of Christians were opportunists who only came to church because of what they would get from it.

According to him, “majority of Christians come to church because they are seeking healing, jobs, spouses or children.”

He said that should not be the reason for people to go to church, stressing, “You should come to church because you want to obey Christ, listen to His words and do His will.”

That, he said, was one of the main reasons why many of them were being led astray by self-styled men of God preaching non-existent doctrines.

He thus asked the youth to remain steadfast and always seek the salvation of their souls instead of running after miracles.

The occasion was also used to induct new national officers who were elected at the just-ended congress.
