Electoral Commission sets Council of State Elections for February 11

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that elections to select Regional Representatives to the Council of State will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in all regional capitals. This decision is in accordance with Paragraph (C), Clause (2) of Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution.

In a statement issued by the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensa, the Commission outlined the requirements and timelines for the nomination process.

“Qualified persons who intend to stand for the said Elections should submit their Nomination Forms with two (2) copies of a recent bust-sized photograph against a RED background showing their full face and ears,” the statement said.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from the EC’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) and must be completed in triplicate. The forms are to be submitted to the EC’s Regional Directors from Tuesday, January 28, to Friday, January 31, 2025, during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Each nomination must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters from the nominee’s region and supported by 20 additional registered voters from the same region. The candidate must also give written consent to their nomination for election to the Council of State.

The EC noted that completed nomination forms must be delivered to the designated Regional Directors at the specified times and locations.

The elections on February 11, 2025, will be conducted at venues in all regional capitals, which will be determined and communicated by the Commission.

The Council of State plays an advisory role to the President, and these elections are a critical step in ensuring regional representation within the body.
