Enforce laws against illegal mining than imposing total ban on all mining activities - National House of Chiefs President
The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has kicked against the proposal for an outright ban on all mining activities in Ghana as part of the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
To him, the public should rather urge the stronger enforcement of regulations against illegal mining and ensure responsible mining.

Speaking at the commissioning of the new Minerals Commission office at Bibiani in the Western North Region on Wednesday [September 18, 2024], Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II said that a blanket ban would damage Ghana's economy, most especially regarding jobs, and stressed how important mining was when done responsibly.
While he condemned galamsey, he said mining remains a very valuable economic activity that can be conducted safely and within the law.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs, has rejected calls for a blanket ban on all mining activities, instead advocating for stricter regulations to ensure responsible mining.
He was reacting to calls asking the government to declare a state of emergency and ban all mining activities following the destruction of forest and water bodies by illegal mining activities.
