Engineers charged to ensure cost-effective road designs
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, has charged engineers of the ministry to come up with cost-effective road designs that will be satisfactory to motorists.

He also asked them to ensure effective procurement planning, taking into consideration scarce financial resources, and provide a road network with balanced mobility and accessibility.
The minister observed that when these are done, it will help avoid excessive variation orders, price escalation and disputes.
Retreat
Alhaji Fuseini was speaking at the closing ceremony of a three-day retreat for engineers and other officers of the ministry in Takoradi.
The meeting was on the theme: "Transformation Agenda: The Role of the Road Sector".
He noted that ensuring effective supervision and monitoring to produce good quality roads in accordance with the ministry's specifications for roads and bridges was a significant part of the engineer's assignment, adding that funds for maintenance works should be given priority by the Road Fund Secretariat.
Alhaji Fuseini, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, stressed the need for the engineers to review the insurance for works and also dialogue with the National Insurance Commission to recoup the cost of damage done to road infrastructure.
He also emphasised the need for the engineers to ensure effective structuring and meticulous preparation of public-private partnership projects.

The meeting, he observed, had provided a valuable platform for important lessons to be learnt, pointing out that the active participation of the engineers in all discussions was a positive demonstration of their readiness to use the outcome of the retreat to develop best practices and make informed decisions.
The Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, who chaired the event, appealed to the participants to go back and vigorously implement all the adopted strategies to improve the road network in the country.
