Eni, partners sign deal to strengthen healthcare delivery in Western Region

Energy company Eni Ghana, together with its Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) partners Vitol Upstream Ghana Ltd and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the Western Region.

The agreement is expected to strengthen primary healthcare services and emergency response systems, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, with a strong focus on maternal and child health.

The initiative is projected to directly benefit about 180,000 people, with the potential to reach up to 380,000 residents across the region over its implementation period.

Running from 2026 to 2029, the programme will prioritise three key areas: improving access to primary healthcare, building the capacity of health workers, and strengthening community health education and engagement.

Under the first component, the partners will support upgrades to health facilities, including the provision of reliable electricity and safe water systems, as well as improvements in maternal, newborn and child health services.

The second focus area will target training and capacity building for health professionals in critical fields such as Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC), clinical governance, safe surgery, and vaccine cold-chain management, with the aim of improving service quality and emergency readiness.

The third pillar of the programme will centre on community engagement, with education campaigns promoting improved water, sanitation and hygiene practices, better waste management, vector control, and nutrition. The initiative will also emphasise sustainability through community ownership, with local health committees expected to play a key role in ensuring long-term impact.

Speaking within the context of the partnership, the stakeholders said the intervention forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system and advance progress towards Universal Health Coverage, particularly in underserved areas.

Eni Ghana has maintained a longstanding presence in community health support initiatives in the Western Region, with projects spanning more than a decade and focusing on healthcare access, water and sanitation, and local development.

The company has operated in Ghana since 2009, engaging in offshore oil and gas exploration and production activities, with current equity production of about 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Eni is the operator of the OCTP project with a 44.4 per cent stake, in partnership with Vitol (35.6 per cent) and GNPC (20 per cent). The joint venture also undertakes wider social investment programmes, including initiatives in training, economic diversification, energy access, and water and sanitation.

The partners say the latest health-focused intervention underscores their commitment to ensuring that energy development is matched with sustained social impact in host communities.
