Enyan Kwekukwaa wants roads rehabilitated

The Chief and people of Enyan Kwekukwaa in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District in the Central Region have appealed to the government and the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Ato Forson, to include branch roads leading to satellite villages in the project when the time comes to construct the main Mankessim-Ajumako road.

According to them, the branch roads from Ofebir to Kwekukwaa, Ofosu to Oboom and Oboame to Kukoado are so bad that vehicles are unable to easily travel on them  to cart farm produce to the main market centres for sale.

Under the circumstances, the inhabitants say they incur losses since large quantities of foodstuffs go to waste even before they could be sent to the market.

The Chief of Enyan Kwekukwaa, Nana Kwame Ampah Ogyeesi II, made the request at a durbar held to climax the annual Akwambo Festival of the town which was celebrated four days. It was on the theme: ‘Awake, let us build Enyan Kwekukwaa’.

Nana Ogyeesi II said because of the poor nature of roads in the territory, it had become very difficult to get vehicles to transport sick persons from Kwakukwaa to the nearest town which has a clinic.

“What happens now is that strong men in the town carry sick persons on their backs to the clinic. Unfortunately, lives have been lost as a result,” he said.

The chief blamed the inability to construct the branch roads on lack of commitment by governments and adviced that governments in power must endeavour to continue with development projects started by their predecessors.

He further requested government to extend educational scholarships to the children of farmers who grew other commercial plants other than cocoa.

The Assembly member for the Atwereboanda Electoral Area, Ibrahim Essuman, added his voice to the request for assistance to improve roads in the area. He said during the rainy season, life in the area was brought to a standstill  because the roads became impassable.

The Daily Graphic can confirm that a number of roads  that connect the Mankessim-Ajumako road to  villages in the area are rough and dusty, making it very uncomfortable to travel on them.
