It was constructed and funded by the Hunger Project Ghana, with support from some communities in the Ada West District.

The Epicentre

The epicentre consists of activities organised by the Hunger Project that represent the efforts of clusters of rural communities mobilised to pursue development objectives.

The Matsekope Epicentre consists of a clinic, a conference room, a food bank, a library and a commercial bank.

Communities that will benefit from the epicentre include Mahem, Salom, Toflokpo, Luhuor, Amlakpo, Addokope, Bornikope and Hwakpo, all in the Ada West District.

Rural participation in development

Institutions have been urged to involve the local structures in development planning.

This was made known by the National Programmes Officer of the Hunger Project, Mr John Sarpong Amoako-Hene, who also congratulated the indigenes of Matsekope and the other beneficiary communities for their contributions towards the epicentre project.

He stated that the epicentre project was aimed at changing the mindset of people from dependency and discrimination to self-reliance and responsibility.

“The success of the epicentre strategy is due, in large measure, to the rigorousness with which the principles of self-reliance are applied,” he added.

He noted that the Hunger Project had, since 1997, established  49 epicentre projects involving 545 communities and affecting positively the lives of about 338,000 people.

Mr Amoako-Hene urged the indigenes of the area to take advantage of the modern facility to improve their lives.

Unity for development

The Chief of Matsekope, Nene Ayiku I, said the success of the epicentre project could be attributed to the unity and harmony that existed between his traditional area and the surrounding communities.

He urged indigenes of the beneficiary communities to remain united to ensure development in the Ada West District.

Epicenter to help attain Millennium Development Goals (MDG)

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ada West, Mr Anthony Klokpa, said the construction of the epicentre would facilitate the attainment of the MDGs.

He also said the training of volunteers by he Hunger Project would increase the sensitisation of people to HIV/AIDS and empower women in the district.

“The assembly is putting measures in place to educate people on methods to help halt or begin to reverse the spread of the disease. HIV/AIDS volunteers will be crucial in the fight against the disease,” he stated.

Benefits of the epicentre project

The benefits of the epicentre project include education and capacity building, technical and economic empowerment, improved food production and security and an improvement in health education.
