The man, Daniel Kweku Ampomah, who is a resident of Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region, is said to have approached some residents of Gomoa Dabeyin and introduced himself as a worker of the ECG Winneba District.

He is said to have told the residents on separate occasions on June 10 and 11, 2016 that he had been contracted by the Benkumhene of Gomoa Dabeyin, Nana Berima Owusu Asare, who is also the Kyidomhene of the Gomah Ajumako Traditional Council, to provide electric meters for residents of Dabeyin New Site, a surburb of Gomoa Dabeyin.

Last Saturday, the court, presided over by Mr Joseph Behome, granted him bail to reappear in two weeks.

Processing fees

The Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Sophia Elis, said Ampomah collected GH¢20 each from his victims, whose numbers were yet to be established.

She said 13 of the residents had reported that he collected various sums of money from them in addition to a GH¢20 initial processing fee to be used as registration and application fee for the ECG prepaid meters.

Arrest

She said Ampomah was exposed when two of the victims, a woman and a man who are a farmer and trader respectively, approached Nana Owusu Asare to thank him for his initiative of connecting them to the national grid.

Ms Elis said the two persons became alarmed when Nana Owusu Asare claimed he had no idea about plans to fix ECG meters in their houses.

The two reported the incident to the police, and Ampomah was lured to Dabeyin on the pretext that more people had expressed interest in the meters.

There he was arrested and handed over to the police at Gomoa Dominase.

During investigations, Ms Elis said, Ampomah admitted he was not an ECG staff and he had not been contracted by the Benkumhene as he had claimed.
