Family pleads for ministry’s intervention in Ngleshie Alata chieftaincy dispute

One of the two royal gates of Ngleshie Alata, the Adansi Royal Family, has appealed to the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to intervene in a looming chieftaincy dispute at the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area.

This follows a ruling by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs in favour of Dr Prince Asharku-Bruce Quaye as the legitimate paramount chief of the area.

Addressing a news conference last Thursday, the Principal Elder of Ahuma of the petitioning royal family, Paa Willie Cheetham, explained that attempts to settle the matter through the courts had proven futile since the parties involved had continued to interfere with the administration of justice.

He cited an earlier suit at the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs barring Dr Quaye from holding himself as the Ngleshie Alata Chief.

Rites

Mr Cheetham stressed that  Dr Quaye was not from any of the royal gates and that Prince Quaye’s enstoolment as the Ngleshie Alata Chief was not complete unlike Henry Nunoo Koppoe, a son of the Adansi Royal Family, who had gone through all the customary rites and waiting to be gazetted.

“Prince Asharku Bruce Quaye's enstoolment as the Ngleshie Alata Mantse was not complete. Henry Nunoo Koppoe, however, went through all the necessary customary rites at Ajumako Dawurampong, the Ngleshie Alata Palace and Weija and has been enstooled as Oblempong Nii Ahuma Kojo III, Paramount Chief of Ngleshie Alata, Jamestown.

“The customary rites were performed by the Nii Okpe Family, who had been adjudged by the 6th August 1985 judgement of Justice Ampiah J.A. as the legitimate kingmakers of Ngleshie Alata, Jamestown led by Nii Tettey Okpe II as the Acting Dzaasetse,” he said.

Gazette

The General Secretary of the Nii Ahuma Family, Apostle Eric Nii Dodoo Amoo, said since Dr Quaye did not go through the customary rites, there was no way he could have been registered or gazetted to be a statutory chief.

He further cautioned companies operating on Ngleshie Alata lands from dealing with Dr Quaye, adding: “We warn the said companies that they will have themselves to blame when the time comes.

“We are also aware that some people are making frantic efforts to take compensation from government in respect of properties compulsorily acquired from the Ngleshie Alata Stool and we assure all and sundry that every effort will be made to resist such ill-intended attempts,” he added.
