Female porters freely registered with NHIS

Pamela Bridgewater Project, a non-governmental organisation that supports female porters (kayayei) and their children, has collaborated with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to freely register 200 female porters in Accra for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)  to enable them to access health care.

According to the Deputy Chief Executive of the NHIA in charge of Administration, Mr Edward Nunoo, the free registration of the female porters for the scheme was part of the authority’s corporate social responsibility.

Show of compassion

He said that was to enhance their access to medical care and called on the public to show compassion to kayayei and help  in protecting vulnerable and hardworking girls.

The Project Director of the Pamela Bridgewater Project, Mr Yahaya Alhassan, thanked the NHIA for its support and show of love and compassion for the female porters.

He said the Bridgewater Project stood for disadvantaged girls and children and the destitute in the country.

Mr Alhassan mentioned that the Bridgewater Project would inaugurate a vocational centre at Abenase, Mamobi, in Accra in November of this year to equip the disadvantaged girls with sewing skills in order to empower them economically.

The Pamela Bridgewater Project supports female porters through education, welfare protection programmes, advocacy and research.
