The destroyed property, which was estimated at GH¢ 100,000, included a set of sitting room furniture, wardrobes, clothing, fabrics, Kente cloths and an amount of GH¢ 4,000 in cash.

Other belongings damaged beyond use are beddings, a flat screen television set, an analogue television set, a refrigerator, a number of suitcases and trunk boxes, electrical equipment, three mobile phones and school certificates.

The couple, 39-year-old Richard Kwasi Boateng and 32-year-old Dorcas Asor Boamah, are both employees of the Birim Central Directorate of the National Health Insurance scheme (NHIS).

According to Mr Boateng, he was sleeping with his wife last Thursday night when at about 11:40 p.m, they heard a loud noise in the hall which woke them.

He said when they rushed to the hall, they saw the place in flames and so they screamed for help which attracted many people to the scene carrying buckets of water to fight the fire.

He said when several calls to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) proved futile, a good Samaritan hurriedly drove to the office of the service to inform them of the disaster. He said personnel from the Fire Service arrived on the scene in less than 20 minutes and fought the fire relentlessly but could not subdue it.

Consequently, he said, the fire destroyed everything in its path, leaving them with only the boxer shorts he was wearing and the bed spread the wife used to cover herself in their escape from the room.

Under the circumstances, Mr Boateng is appealing to the government through the Birim Central Municipal Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and philanthropic organisations and individuals to come to their aid since they have nothing to live on as their entire property and life savings were gone.

The Oda Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mohammed Issah Cantona has inspected the scene of the incident.
