According to Ms Roselyn F. Adjei Zuta, the Assistant Manager of REDD+ Process and Gender, an organisation that works towards addressing issues of climate change, women should be included in sustainable forest management because they formed more than 50 per cent of the country’s population and excluding them from major decisions related to forestry management could affect productivity.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview after the workshop, she said women needed to be trained and given sufficient knowledge on the various sectors of forestry management.

She pointed out that the organisation would motivate them to participate and show more interest in forestry activities.

According to her, restrictions of women arising out of various factors were a disincentive to developing their potentials.

She added that by the end of the workshop, the women would have been sensitised to show more interest in forestry, especially the REDD+ Process and that “when we know what women derive from the process, as well as men, we can be gender responsive.”

She expressed the hope that the workshop would enhance the knowledge of the women to enable them to explain the technicalities involved in forestry to their colleagues in the regions.

Climate Change manager

Addressing the workshop, the Manager of the Climate Change Unit (CCU) of the Forestry Commission, Mr Yaw Kwakye, said climate change had negative implications on the environment so it was important to pay particular attention to it.

He said programmes of the REDD+ Process should be an all-inclusive one, with everyone getting involved.

In his opening remarks, the Director of Human Resource at the Forestry Commission, Mr Andy Osei-Okrah, commended the executives of the FC Ladies for the laudable initiative.

He stated that the workshop would benefit them in so many ways.
