Ga South to become cleanest in Greater Accra

The Ga South Municipal Assembly is determined to make the municipality the cleanest in the Greater Accra Region.

As a first step, the assembly is providing one dustbin for every household in the municipality to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Mr Joseph Nyarni Stephen, who delivered an address at the first ordinary meeting of the assembly however, explained that residents would be required to pay for the cost of collecting the refuse.

He said the assembly would also partner private waste management companies to implement the initiative.

Internally Generated Fund

Mr Nyarni Stephen said the total Internally Generated Fund (IGF) projected from all revenue sources  for 2018 financial year was GH¢3,500,000.

He explained that within one month of operation, the assembly mobilised GH¢147,067.28, representing five per cent of the total IGF projected for the 2018 financial year.

Achieve  the target

He said as a new assembly, it had put in place strategies to achieve the target set for the assembly. He, therefore, entreated assembly members to assist in revenue mobilisation.

The MCE said as a step to mobilise more revenue, the assembly had started visiting the various electoral areas to bring  good governance  to the doorstep of the people.

He said the assembly was committed to holding Town Hall Meetings as a means of deepening accountability and transparency to the people.

One-district, one-factory

Mr Stephen stated that in fulfilment of the President’s initiative of creating more jobs for the youth under the one-district one-factory programme, Everpure Ghana Limited had been selected  for the programme at Tomefa in the Ga South municipality.

He said the factory was expected to produce bottled and sachet water from the Densu Lake.

The MCE said the assembly would facilitate the provision of roads, utilities and security to make the factory function effectively to employ more youth in the area.

The Presiding Member of the assembly, Mr Abdul Wahab Mohammed, who expressed delight at the partnership between the company and the assembly, said about 2,000 jobs would be generated directly and indirectly from the factory.
