Under the project, more than 80,000 compound toilets are expected to be built for low-income earners in the municipality.

The project forms part of efforts by the municipality to improve sanitation and hygiene in the area.

For a start, a Biofil and Enviroloo toilet facilities will be constructed in every household without places of convenience.

The project was launched by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, and the Municipal Chief Executive of the GWMA, Mr Sam Atukwei Quaye, at Amasaman.

Sanitation situation by MMDAs

In an address, Mr Afotey Agbo asked the residents to assist the assembly to improve the current sanitation situation in the area.

According to him, sanitation was one of the major challenges confronting the municipal, metropolitan and district assemblies (MMDAs).

That, he said, had resulted in the numerous cholera cases recorded all over the country.

He, therefore, called on the MMDAs to put pragmatic steps in place to deal with the canker.

According to him, the assembly would use 49 per cent of its budget to fund the project while the remaining 51 per cent would be raised through revenue collection.

Measures put place

As part of measures to improve the sanitation situation in the municipality, Mr Quaye said, the assembly had entered into a public-private-partnership (PPP) with the Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), HFC Boafo Microfinance Services Ltd and Unilever Nederland.

During the first three years of the project, the implementation would focus on the low-income communities within Amasaman, Pokuase and Amamorley before it would progressively move to the communities in all the six zonal councils in the municipality.
