GBC workers union petitions NMC over Director General’s tenure

The Divisional Union of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has reiterated its call, raising questions about the tenure of the Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan.

They have consequently petitioned the National Media Commission (NMC), urging swift action over what it describes as the inappropriate continued occupancy of the Director-General’s office, arguing that Professor Amin Alhassan's four-year tenure officially ended on October 1, 2023.

Already, in a response to an earlier similar petition by the workers, the National Media Commission in March 2025 clarified that it renewed the appointment of Prof. Amin Alhassan as Director-General GBC, on February 26, 2024.

The decision, the NMC explained, was publicly announced during the inauguration of the new GBC Board on August 13, 2024.

The NMC said some recent media reports, however, suggested that some GBC employees were unaware of the contract renewal in February 2024.

The commission, therefore, asked the board to take immediate steps to communicate the renewal to all staff and gave an assurance of its readiness to provide any necessary clarification.

New petition

However, in a new petition, dated July 21, 2025, and addressed to NMC Chairperson Professor Akua Biritwum, the Union insisted that Prof Alhassan's tenure has ended and noted that this was the fourth formal petition on the matter.

The Union raised concerns over the legal and operational risks associated with Professor Alhassan’s continued decision-making, arguing that his actions lack legitimacy and could have serious implications for the Corporation.

“This remains our firm position,” the Union stated.

Supporting their claim, the Union referenced a letter dated March 14, 2025, from the Controller and Accountant Generals Department, which invoked Section 25(5) of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921).

Despite these developments, the Union said that the NMC has failed to act, describing the Commission’s silence as a tacit endorsement of what it called mismanagement and financial malfeasance.

The Union warned that if the issue is not resolved within 10 working days, it will be compelled to advise itself, signaling possible industrial action or legal steps.
