DVLA recalls defective 2026 embossed number plates, offers free replacement

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has taken action to address an issue identified with a limited batch of 2026 embossed number plates, announcing that affected vehicle owners can obtain free replacements at any DVLA office nationwide.

In a public notice issued on April 27, the Authority stated that routine quality checks revealed that some plates did not meet the Authority's durability standards, causing the printed characters to fade.

Once detected, the affected batch was immediately withdrawn from circulation, although some plates had already been issued to vehicle owners.

"All affected vehicle owners are invited to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement," the Authority said.

The DVLA apologised for the inconvenience caused and said it takes full responsibility for the oversight.

"The DVLA is strengthening its quality assurance processes to prevent a recurrence and remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and high-quality vehicle registration services," the statement read.

The Authority did not disclose the size of the affected batch or how many vehicles were issued with the defective plates. Vehicle owners have been encouraged to visit their nearest DVLA office for assistance.
