The Gender Studies Rights Documentation Centre (Gender Centre) and MIHOSO International organised the workshop with support from the European Union (EU).

It was attended by representatives of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Department of Social Welfare, Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other civil society organisations.

Topics treated included gender-based violence, causes and consequences of early/forced marriages, children’s rights and laws on children’s rights, among others.

Participants were drawn from the Nkoranza North District and Kintampo Municipality.

The Executive Director of the Gender Centre, Madam Dorcas Coker Appiah, in her address said the training formed part of a two-year project being implemented in 10 communities in the two districts.

She explained that a similar programme was held for 44 students from each of the beneficiary communities to enable them to serve as peer educators under the project.

They will also serve as a link between the schoolchildren and community members in providing counselling and supporting victims to access services.

The project is aimed at reducing early and forced marriages among adolescent girls in Chirandra, Babatokuma, Gurumpe, Kadelso and Kawumpe in the Kintampo Municipality and Dinkra, Dromankese, Dromankuma, Senya and Temiebu in the Nkoranza North District.
