The water systems were funded by GGBL in  partnership with the Diageo Foundation under its flagship community investment programme Water of Life (WoL). With the provision of the facilities, the beneficiary communities, with a combined population of about 68,000, will now have access to clean drinking water.

The project, which is estimated to be worth GH¢540,000, is part of the company’s commitment to make a positive impact on the communities from where it gets its  local raw materials in producing its premium brands. In December 2012, GGBL introduced Ruut Extra Beer, Ghana’s first cassava beer, with cassava sourced and processed in the Awutu Senya District.

The water facilities comprised four mechanised systems and six boreholes. The recipient communities and institution are Asempaneye, Bewuanum, Pabionkor, Fianko, Fianko Akura, Mayenda, Gyan Nkwanta and the Bawdjiase Health Centre.

The Communications and Engagement Manager of GGBL, Mrs Rita Rockson, said the company was proud of its impact in the communities where it sourced its raw materials.

“The livelihoods of local farmers and their families are gradually improving. In a socio-economic impact study conducted by an independent body on our WoL programme, we identified improvements in healthcare, girl-child education and other sustainable livelihood programmes, while the incidence of water-borne diseases had also decreased from 15 per cent to three per cent in these communities,” she said.

Ms Hanna Tetteh, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya Constituency, said it was a relief to have such investments being made in the communities. She said Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited had set the pace for other businesses to follow.

“The ripple effect of such investment is enormous and strengthens government’s plans of encouraging local content across the value chain”.

The Chief of Bawdjiase, Nai Kweku Orsadu, on behalf of the beneficiary communities, expressed gratitude to GGBL.

He said, “the chiefs and people of the communities will properly use and maintain  the facilities.”

GGBL under its flagship community investment programme, Water of Life, has invested in over 70 communities across the country since its inception in 2007. The programme is aimed at supporting communities without access to clean drinking water.
