Ghana evacuates Embassy staff from Iran as tensions escalate

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development in a Facebook post on Monday, March 2, 2026, confirming that the evacuation had been completed without incident.

“I am delighted to announce that we have conducted a successful evacuation of all our embassy staff in Iran,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

He assured the public that the diplomats are unharmed. “The Ghanaian diplomats are safe and in high spirits,” he added.

The minister further disclosed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Tehran has been shut down indefinitely. “Ghana’s embassy in Iran is now closed sine die,” he noted.

He stressed that the decision was guided by the need to protect citizens. “The safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaians remains our utmost priority in these tempestuous times.”

The evacuation follows a dramatic spike in tensions in the Middle East after coordinated military strikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets on February 28, 2026. The strikes, according to international reports, targeted military infrastructure and strategic sites, heightening fears of a broader regional confrontation.

The fallout has triggered airspace closures, disrupted commercial flights and raised security alerts across the region, prompting several countries to reassess their diplomatic presence in Iran and neighbouring states.

Although the ministry did not disclose operational details of the evacuation, the move signals Accra’s cautious response to the deteriorating security environment. The temporary closure of the embassy is expected to suspend consular services until further notice.

Mr Ablakwa ended his message with a patriotic sign-off: “For God and Country.”

Diplomatic observers say Ghana is likely to continue monitoring developments closely before deciding on the resumption of normal operations in Iran, as uncertainty persists over the trajectory of the conflict and its wider geopolitical implications.
