41st National Farmers’ Day launched - Ho to host grand durbar on December 5

The 41st edition of the National Farmers’ Day will be held in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, on Friday, December 5, this year.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, confirmed the date during the launch of the national exercise at the forecourt of the ministry in Accra last Friday.

He stated that the nationwide events were estimated to cost over GH¢20 million and called on corporate bodies, development partners and philanthropists to support the celebration, which honours the contributions of the nation's farmers, fishers and agricultural workers.

Mr Opoku said the choice of Ho as the host city was both strategic and symbolic, given the region’s rich agricultural heritage, reflecting the government’s commitment to balanced regional development.

To be marked on the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future”, this year’s celebration will highlight the importance of national food security, agricultural self-sufficiency and sustainable job creation.

“With the gracious approval of His Excellency the President of the Republic, the 41st National Farmers’ Day Grand Durbar and Awards Ceremony will be hosted in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, on Friday, December 5, 2025, which is the first Friday of December, as stipulated by the National Holidays Act," he stated.

The Food and Agriculture Minister said the theme was a timely reminder of the collective responsibility to sustain national food security and economic independence.
“It underscores the Ministry’s vision to ensure that Ghana produces what she eats and eats what she produces,” Mr Opoku added.

National Agriculture Fair

The Food and Agriculture Minister explained that a five-day National Agricultural Fair would precede the grand Durbar, running from December 1 to 5, to be held in partnership with AgriHouse Foundation in Ho.

The fair, he said, would showcase innovations across the agricultural value chain, including mechanisation, irrigation, fisheries and digital agriculture.

"Since its inception in 1985, the National Farmers’ Day has evolved into one of the most important events on our national calendar. It is not only a celebration of the toil and sacrifice of our farmers but also an expression of gratitude for their indispensable role in driving food security, job creation and economic growth,” he said.

"May this year’s celebration inspire renewed commitment, unity of purpose and innovation in advancing Ghana’s agricultural transformation," the Minister of Food and Agriculture entreated.

Launch ceremony

Also present at the launch were the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur; the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu; the Chief Director of Agricultural Extension, Paul Siameh; members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from the Ghana Cocoa Board, and partner institutions such as EXIM Bank, Agricultural Development Bank and Stanbic Bank.

Also present were directors, project coordinators, heads of departments and agencies, as well as leaders of farmer associations.

Increased production

For her part, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture emphasised the importance of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Ghana’s food system and national development.

Ms Arthur called for increased local production, responsible consumption and protection of natural resources to ensure long-term food security and economic sustainability.

She praised the efforts of fishers and aquaculture operators in meeting the country’s fish protein needs, stating that fish made up about 60 per cent of the country’s annual protein intake, with per capita consumption at 17.8kg.
