Akoti health centre attack: Police storm Assin Wurakese, arrest 100 in swoop

Hundred residents of Assin Wurakese in the Assin Fosu municipality were at dawn last Friday rounded up in a swoop in connection with the recent armed attack on a patient at the Akoti health centre.

The operation led by the Central North Regional Police Command involved the deployment of about 85 security personnel to Assin Wurakese.

A recent viral video revealed several young men storming the health facility and attacking one Yaw Buabeng, a patient seeking treatment at the health facility for machete wounds.

Briefing the media, the Central North Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abraham Acquaye, said the arrests followed sustained intelligence gathering, which indicated that the attack on the patient was a coordinated mob action involving several individuals within the community.

He said the suspects would be screened and those culpable arraigned before court.

He said evidence during investigations indicated that some of the arrested persons failed to prevent the crime, others aided and abetted the attackers, while some harboured suspects without reporting them to the police.

Earlier arrests

The Regional Commander said the swoop followed three earlier arrests made in connection with the case.

According to him, two persons, a community police assistant, one Bismark Yeboah and one Yaw Buabeng, who was earlier a victim of the mob attack at the health facility and a suspect, in a related attack, had already been arraigned before court, and subsequently remanded into police custody.

The two are expected to appear before the court again on February 5, 2026.

DCOP Acquaye further confirmed that the third person, Daniel Ababio, who had been attacked by Yaw Buabeng, resulting in the mob attack was also captured in the viral video, allegedly inflicting injuries with a pair of scissors on Yaw Buabeng at the Akoti Health Centre was also arrested.

Background

The incident occurred last Sunday, January 11, 2026, compelling health personnel to abandon post.

The incident occurred after a violent altercation between Yaw Buabeng and a couple, during which both parties reportedly inflicted cutlass wounds on each other.

Buabeng rushed to the Akoti healthy facility to receive treatment but a mob of young men from the Assin Wurakese community went to the facility, beating Buabeng to a pulp with sticks and clubs.

DCOP Acquaye cautioned the public against filming incidents where people are being attacked or killed instead of intervening or alerting the police, stressing that such conduct was unlawful.

He also cautioned against violent attack, saying the police will not countenance such.

He gave an assurance that the Police Command would not bow to pressure from politicians, traditional authorities, or any influential persons, emphasising that the law will be applied without fear or favour.
