Artificial Intelligence not threat to accountancy — ICAG
The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ghana (ICAG ), Augustine Addo, has said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a threat to their profession but a tool to boost efficiency.
He said the accounting profession worldwide was evolving and that "one cannot be an accountant today and tomorrow and not understand the basics about AI and other issues”.
Mr Addo, who has worked with many blue-chip companies in the country, therefore, urged members of the institute to brace themselves by adopting the transformative form of AI since it presented opportunities for accountants to enhance their efficiency.
The President of ICAG gave the assurance at a press conference in Takoradi during the 2025 ICAG conference, which is expected to close today.
The conference is on the theme: "Leveraging the transformative power of AI – The role of the professional accountant".
Mr Addo said by 2030, any accountant who did not understand the rudiments of AI would be out of place.
"AI would not replace accountants but accountants who do not use AI could be replaced by those who use AI," he said.
The president said the ICAG sought to prepare accountants with continuous education and setting of standards for the usage of AI.
Mr Addo further advised accountants to ensure that AI was used ethically, transparently and responsibly.
He reiterated that the institute would not relent on its mandate in shaping the accounting profession to assist the government in fighting corruption.
Mr Addo reminded members that the profession in the country was premised on integrity, and they must, therefore, endeavour to uphold those values.
Discipline
The Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Kwasi Agyeman, called for discipline among accountants.
The conference is being attended by members from across the country.
Among activities lined up were the induction of newly qualified members, seminars, workshops, as well as interactive and networking sessions
