Atuabo Gas plant to shut down for 2 weeks: Move won’t affect power supply — Ministry

The Ghana National Gas Company Ltd (Ghana Gas) will undertake a scheduled maintenance of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant from Saturday, August 16, to Saturday August 30, this year.

During the maintenance period the company would shut down the country’s main natural gas source for two weeks.

Though it would affect gas supply for power generation, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has given the assurance that it would make alternative fuels available to fill the gap.

“Ghana Gas will temporarily suspend the supply of gas within the stated period to facilitate this essential maintenance,” the statement stressed.

“The ministry said in collaboration with key power sector players, it had put in place comprehensive measures to mitigate any potential impact on power supply during the maintenance period,” the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition said in a statement issued in Accra yesterday, and signed by its Spokesperson and Head of Communication, Richmond Rockson.

It said it had approved the shutdown request from the company.

“This essential maintenance is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of the plant,” the statement said.

Maintenance activities

The shutdown will enable Ghana Gas to undertake critical maintenance activities designed to enhance its operational efficiency and overall performance.

The activities include inspections, repairs and upgrades to key equipment and systems.

These measures include the strategic deployment of alternative fuel sources to ensure a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply across the country.

The Energy Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to maintain reliable power supply at all times.

“We will keep the public informed by providing regular updates on the progress of the ongoing maintenance,” it said.
