Church must show concern about happenings in society — Apostle Nyamekye

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost (CoP), Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has said the Church should not only save souls in the course of its ministry, but should also be concerned about what goes on in society.

He said there was the need, therefore, to refocus the doors of the Church to face the world since that was where the ministry was.

"So, no church should say that I don't care about politics, I don't care about the leadership of the nation, I don't care about what goes on in the market place, no; it would affect the church. So, the essence of church is to make sure that light drives darkness away," he said.

Generation

Apostle Nyamekye said this last Thursday at the opening of the Younger Generation Politicians and Leaders Conference of the CoP at the Pentecost Convention Centre at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region.

Speakers at the conference included a former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Samuel Kwaku Bonsu; the Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah; the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, and the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The church, Apostle Nyamekye said, was interested in politics and leadership of the nation because its purpose in general was to transform nations.

"For me, if the church is not able to bring any transformation on the land, then the church is not relevant. The purpose of light is to drive away darkness.

What is the use of light if there is darkness all around us?," he asked. Again, he said the CoP was involved in politics and leadership of the nation because history enjoined it to be part of the conversation of national development.

"Number three is that righteousness exalts a nation. Righteousness exalts a nation and this is where the church is strongest; righteousness. When it comes to morality, this is where we are strong. We are stronger in righteousness even than the politicians. So the church should also come in," he said.

Apostle Nyamekye indicated that the church was organising the conference with a view to raise a new crop of politicians and leaders who would bring upon a transform the world.

Leaders

The new crop of leaders, he said, were people who would love the nation and work towards changing the Ghanaian.

"That is why we want to raise a new crop of leaders who are patriotic, who are honest, who don't go into politics because of what they would get but because of the love of the nation," he said.

Apostle Nyamekye charged young people to count the cost of becoming politicians since it was not just going for the money or fame or power, there was also the aspect of vulnerability.

“Now everything about you will be on social media, and sometimes what you have not said, they would say you have said it. When you marry, maybe you have a woman in addition to your wife, people will hear it.

Moreover, the young people who want to go into politics must have integrity and be skilled to be able to solve problems.

Apostle Nyamekye said the human was created to be the manager of the earth and not corrupt it, and identified incompetence and greed as the bane of development.

Private

“So nothing about you is private any longer. There is vulnerability. So when you want to be a politician or a leader, please count the cost. Politicians and leaders of the society should, therefore, have integrity of heart and you have skillful hands to be able to lead,” he said.

He said the church was not just hoping to raise young people to be assemblymen and women, but cabinet ministers and presidents of the country.

In addition, Apostle Nyamekye told the participants, among other things, that the church wanted to raise leaders to work at places, including the European Commission, the United Nations, and occupy very high positions across the world where decisions were made.

“Unless we raise Christians who can go to these places, nothing will change. What do you want people to do when they sit at the table and none of them fears Christ, and they don't know God?
