Defy limitations and lead with purpose - Impact Hub CEO advises youth

Graduates of the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) in Accra have been encouraged to rise above their circumstances and envision futures beyond their current limitations.

Also, they should draw inspiration from their humble beginnings to achieve their dreams by showing diligence, determination and focus in their endeavours.

Speaking at the 2025 graduation ceremony of the institute in Accra yesterday, the co-founder and CEO of Impact Hub, William Senyo, used the story of his journey, from growing up in a wooden shack to become a successful global entrepreneur to inspire the graduates.

He stressed that a person’s beginning did not define their ultimate potentials.

The event, which was on the theme: “Character by design: Building tomorrow with purpose,” highlighted the importance of resilience, innovation and ethical leadership in a rapidly changing world.

In all, 328 students graduated from the institute.

Choose action over cynicism

Mr Senyo urged graduates to navigate the complexities of modern life, ranging from technological disruptions to global instability, by cultivating critical thinking and rejecting passive, algorithm-driven mindsets.

He cautioned against the growing trend of cynicism, urging the graduates to be original thinkers committed to solving problems rather than merely discussing them.

"What is harder [than being cynical] is to wake up every day to go against the brain [of] all those issues and try to fix it every single day.

Let this be your calling card as you step out of this: I do less talking about the problems.

I do more about fixing it every single day,” he stated.

Ceremony

The Founder of DTI, Constance Swaniker, noted that the graduating class represented all 16 regions of Ghana, with an impressive 55 per cent female participation and an overall pass rate of 92 per cent.

She said DTI’s training model deliberately integrated technical competence with strong character formation, an approach that had consistently led to successful internship placements and job opportunities for graduates.

"Remember your skill will make you employable, but your character will make you exceptional,” she stated.

Ms Swaniker revealed that soft skills mastery among learners had surged from 30 per cent at enrolment to 99 per cent by graduation, thanks to DTI’s holistic programming focused on emotional intelligence, teamwork, communication, discipline, resilience and problem-solving.

She noted that the graduation took place against a backdrop of Ghana’s challenging economic situation, where job creation lagged behind population growth.

To address this, DTI, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, is set to launch a Precision Quality (PQ) internship programme aimed at equipping 6,000 young people with technical and workplace-readiness skills.

Character

The Registrar of DTI, Ama Aboagyewaa Akor, reminded the graduates that true success extended beyond technical expertise.

She highlighted the institution’s philosophy that leadership required integrity, discipline and a deep sense of purpose.

"Remember that the world does not reward potential alone.

It rewards purpose, consistency and integrity,” she told the graduates.

Ms Akor encouraged them to step into the world as “intentional architects” of their future, using the values instilled in them to drive positive impact across the continent and beyond.
