A private health insurance company, DOSH Health Insurance, has partnered MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) to make health insurance cover accessible to millions of people directly through their MoMo App, a first for mainstream health insurance in the country.
The initiative allows subscribers to enrol, pay premiums and access insurance services instantly on MoMo, eliminating paperwork, queues and traditional banking barriers.
The launch of the product in Accra yesterday marks a significant step in expanding access to healthcare financing by combining health insurance delivery with one of the country’s most widely used digital financial platforms – MoMo– which has over 17 million active users.
The scheme is anchored on accessibility, availability and affordability, targeting families, small businesses and informal sector workers often excluded from private health insurance.
Collaboration
Speaking at the launch of the partnership deal, the Deputy Director in charge of Research, Statistics and Information Management at the Ministry of Health, Simpson Addo, who represented the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said the DOSH-MTN MoMo partnership marked a significant milestone in the country’s health financing journey and demonstrated the impact of private sector innovation in advancing national priorities.
He said while the National Health Insurance Scheme had made important gains, coverage gaps persisted, particularly among informal sector workers and low-income households.
“Financial protection is a critical pillar of health security, and innovations like this help remove long-standing barriers such as distance, paperwork and banking requirements,” he said.
Mr Addo added that leveraging mobile money, which had become an integral part of daily life, created a fast and inclusive pathway for millions to secure health coverage.
Barrier removal
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the DOSH Health Insurance, Frank Dagbui, said the collaboration represented a decisive step in removing long-standing barriers to private health insurance access in Ghana.
He said many Ghanaians remained uninsured not by choice, but because of limited awareness, affordability challenges and cumbersome enrolment processes that discouraged participation.
He said DOSH was established to change this narrative by placing health insurance directly in the hands of citizens through simple digital tools.
“This partnership aligns with government’s efforts to strengthen financial protection and advance universal health coverage through private sector innovation,” Mr Dagbui stated.
He said that by leveraging MTN MoMo’s wide user base and trusted digital platform, DOSH was making health insurance as easy as sending money, buying airtime or paying utility bills.
The CEO stressed that the scheme was anchored on accessibility, availability and affordability to ensure that income level or social background did not determine access to quality health care.
Mr Dagbui said the company’s 24-hour call centre and nationwide accredited healthcare network would guarantee real-time claims processing and uninterrupted support for subscribers and healthcare providers.
Mr Dagbui added that the initiative supported the government’s 24-hour economy agenda and demonstrated how technology and compassion could work together to deliver inclusive, reliable and affordable healthcare protection for all Ghanaians.
Digital technology
For her part, the Head of Sales and Marketing at DOSH Health Insurance, Berlinda Amoo, said DOSH had redefined private healthcare delivery by combining cutting-edge digital technology with strong operational expertise to provide services once considered unattainable in the market.
The company had built an extensive healthcare network, partnering accredited public, private and faith-based facilities nationwide that guaranteed quality care wherever subscribers were located, she said.
Ms Amoo added that DOSH’s value proposition ensured that premium health care was within the reach of every Ghanaian, regardless of income or location.
MTN’s innovation
The Chief Product and Services Officer of Mobile Money Limited, Sylvia Otuo Acheampong, said MTN was excited to partner DOSH to use technology to expand access to private health insurance for millions of Ghanaians.
The collaboration pushed health insurance services beyond traditional transactions by making enrolment, payments and redemption seamless.
“At Mobile Money, we believe technology should go beyond payments and transactions, and this partnership with DOSH enables us to make life better and brighter for customers who would otherwise struggle to access health insurance,” Ms Otuo Acheampong said.
