Eastern House of Chiefs rejects ‘coup’ in Yilo Krobo

The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has rejected a request by a faction within the Yilo Krobo Traditional Council seeking the withdrawal of the recognition of the Paramount Chief of Yilo Krobo, Oklepeme Nuer Anorbaa Sasraku II.

The House also dismissed further demands by the group for the removal of the Paramount Chief’s name from the National Register of Chiefs.

The development follows a letter submitted by a faction of the traditional council to the Registrar of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, purportedly informing the House of changes made to the membership and leadership structure of the council.

In a letter signed by Nene Amoatey Akpatsu Azza VI, leader of the dissenting faction, the group said its decisions were validly taken and confirmed by “more than one-half of the registered membership of the council present, thereby forming a quorum”.

However, in a response signed by its Registrar, Ama Konadu Kusi, the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs rejected the request.

“I am directed by the President of the House to respond to your letter dated December 15, 2025, in respect of the above subject,” the letter said.

“Please be informed that we are unable to accede to your request to withdraw the recognition of the Paramount Chief of Yilo Krobo,” the letter added.

The House further expressed reservations about the purported extraordinary meeting and the decisions allegedly taken at the gathering, stating that such actions were inconsistent with the provisions of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759).

According to the letter, “For this reason, any decision purported to have been taken on the said date thereof, including the appointment of an acting President, change in membership of the council, and suspension of registration of the Chief in the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, is null and void”.

The House further clarified that “for the avoidance of doubt, there is no acting President of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area”, and that “as per the records of the House, there is a substantive President of the council in the person of Oklepeme Nuer Anorbaa Sasraku II”.

The letter also cautioned the dissenting faction to “ensure, therefore, that there is no interference with the activities and running of the office”.

At a meeting held on January 16, 2025, a dissatisfied faction of the council, chaired by Nene Amoatey Akpatsu Azza VI, and Nene Anyeenorgu Teye Agor IX as the Secretary, purportedly resolved that the Konor of Yilo Krobo had self-destooled himself, a position that remains contrary to the official recognition and customs of the traditional area.
