Foundation commemorates World Environment Day with tree planting exercise

The Lady Margaret Foundation (LMF), has organised a tree planting exercise to mark this year’s World Environment Day.

The initiative called the “LMF GreenRevive" programme, was held in collaboration with St Sylvanus Basic School in Fise-Accra in the Ga West municipality last Thursday, under a national campaign theme: "Tree for life."

The exercise focused on youth engagement and environmental sustainability through tree planting and education.

Exercise

The tree planting exercise saw the LMF and the pupils of Sylvanus Basic School plant over 100 tree seedlings at the school and its surrounding community.

The tree species planted included Mentia, Mahogany, Coconut and Rain Plant which were acquired from the Forestry Commission.

More than 300 pupils in the school were divided into nine groups for the exercise which offered them hands-on training.

They were educated on the importance of trees, biodiversity, climate action and sustainable living practices.

Call to Action

The Founder and Executive Director of LMF, Mrs Margaret Davids Opoku-Agyeman, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, called on government agencies, including local authorities, environmental organisations and educational institutions to invest in environmental programmes, “particularly those involving children and schools”.

She indicated that the foundation’s GreenRevive initiative aimed to promote environmental sustainability and climate action among the youth.

“By engaging students in tree planting and environmental education, the programme seeks to empower the next generation to take environmental responsibility seriously,” she said.

Mrs Opoku-Agyeman emphasised the need for regular tree planting and care in order to preserve and protect the environment as well as reduce pollution and promote biodiversity.

She also called for appropriate legislation to reduce plastic use and also promote recycling.

Awareness

Mrs Opoku-Agyeman further underscored the need for heightened environmental education.

“Educating people on the importance of environmental conservation must be intensified. It is necessary for promoting sustainable practices to conserve water and land resources,” the founder said.

She affirmed the organisation’s commitment to long-term environmental action and work towards a cleaner, greener and more environmentally sustainable country.
