Ghana Lions mark 2019 World Diabetes Day

Lions Clubs in Ghana, have undertaken various health screening exercises to mark this year’s World Diabetes Day.

The clubs also organised diabetes awareness talks and health walks to let the public know the importance of such healthy lifestyles.

Accra Premier Lions Club undertook a free diabetes and other medical screening exercises at the Osu Home School at Kaadjaano, Ultimate, Tema Supreme and Accra Excel, undertook free health screening activities, at the Teshie Midwifery and Nursing Training School.

The Tema Lions Club, earlier held a health screening exercise during the celebration of this year’s Hogbetsotso Festival in the Volta Region.

Members of the club and health officials, screened the eyes of the people, examined the breasts of the women for cancer, did malaria tests, as well as checked their blood pressure.

They later donated seven wheel chairs to the Anloga Clinic.

The Governor for District 418 of Lions Clubs International, Lion Doctor Kwaku Mensa Bonsu told the Graphic Online that similar activities were also undertaken by the Dansoman Keep Fit Club and Gye Nyame Lions /Leos Club.

He said they undertook a health walk from the Dansoman Keep Fit Club through the principal streets there, across the Russia road and Banana Inn.

He said other activities to mark the day include health screening and games all on the theme; Mitigating Cardio Vascular and Diabetic disease through physical exercise.

On their part, he said Accra Diamond and Accra Metro Lions Clubs will be organising a talk on sedentary lifestyle and diabetes at the SSNIT Guest House in Accra.

Lion Mensa Bonsu said Accra Golden Lions Club also marked the day with a health screening exercise and created awareness on diabetes at the Agbogbloshie market in Accra.

Meanwhile, the Tema Greenwich Lions Club on Friday, presented a Charter to the Akomapa Leo Club and inducted members and installed officers, as part of activities, marking the Diabetes Awareness Day.

He said Accra Ultimate Lions Club has also planned a health talk on diabetes in Tema.
Similar activities were held by Kumasi Royal Lions in Kumasi, as well as well other Lions Clubs in other areas, he announced.

The District Governor was happy to note that Ghana Lions throughout the country had teamed up with specialised medical technicians to provide free screening services to the people at various places in addition to the health talks and sensitisation.

He said diabetes medications were also distributed to patients by Lions Clubs supported by some pharmaceutical companies, while some medical items were also donated.

“It is the aim of Lions Clubs in Ghana to ensure that Ghanaians become aware of the health dangers posed by diabetes and take the necessary action to check their status,” he advised.

He noted that diabetes was manageable and urged the public to take steps to know their status by being screened.

“Ghana, as a Provisional District 418 has been set to participate fully in this worldwide activity and is also poised to create awareness of the disease which is a silent killer in the communities," he added.
