GNAT condemns assault on 3 teachers by soldiers
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has condemned the physical assault on three of its members by military personnel at Adiewoso M/A Basic School in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region.
It has consequently demanded that the perpetrators be brought to book, the victims (teachers) taken care of and compensated adequately for the act of brutality meted out by their abusers.
“Hence, we serve notice that this demand be met on or by close of day, Monday, May 25, 2026, or we advise ourselves accordingly,” GNAT said in a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Selasi Gloria Tali, for the General Secretary, Thomas Musah.
The attack by the military on the teachers of the Adiewoso M/A Basic School reportedly happened on April 30, 2026.
GNAT said it was “vehemently dismayed and appalled” by the acts of assault meted out to teachers in their line of duty across the country in recent times, and “condemns such assaults in no uncertain terms, with all the powers at its disposal”.
“We also remember our colleague, Asare-Menako, who, in the line of duty, refused to allow candidates to take mobile phones into an examination hall, for which reason he was assaulted, culminating in his death three days later, in October 2005,” it said.
It referenced the attack by some students on a Mathematics teacher at the Kade Senior High Technical School, Michael Quayson, for enforcing examination regulations during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the attack by community members on teachers of the West Africa Secondary School in Accra as instances of the kind of danger that teachers were exposed to.
“We also recall the several acts of violence which were recorded at the Eastern Regional Super Zonal sports competition in February 2026, and in the other regions across the country.
“GNAT deems all these acts as diabolical and spiteful, to say the least,” the teachers’ group said.
Wassa West GNAT
The Wassa West District of GNAT, in a press release, had alleged that it was realiably informed that on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, a battalion from 2BN, Apremdo-Takoradi, acting on behalf of Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) at Agona Nkwanta, had gone to Adiewoso to stop galamsey activities close to the rubber plantation of the firm.
It said the action by the soldiers resulted in a confrontation with the illegal miners.
It said the soldiers then left for their barracks after the confrontation.
The statement said unknown to the residents of Adiewoso, the military men besieged the town in the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2026 and subjected the residents, especially the males, to severe beatings and other forms of molestation.
"Unfortunately, the molestation was extended to three teachers of the Adiewoso M/A Basic School, including the headteacher and husband of one of the female teachers in the school who had gone there to visit his wife.
"Although, the teachers did all that they could to let the men know that they were not part of the galamseyers, the men ignored it and molested the three teachers and the husband of one of the female teachers," the statement said.
