Initiative on recycling discarded fabrics launched in Accra

Reclaim Textile Network, an NGO, has launched an initiative to recycle discarded fabrics.

The programme is on the theme “Reclaim, Revive, Reimagine.”

The textile waste collection and upcycling for sustainable livelihood project seeks to curb these effects not just by removing waste, but by turning it into opportunity.

Its focus is on health, sustainability and inclusive development.

The event which was attended by students, artisans, educators and environmental advocates, was chaired by Dr Christiana Konamah Okai-Mensah (PhD), an educator and advocate for sustainable design.

It featured a fashion show showcasing dresses made from recycled textiles. Young designers who presented their creations, highlighted the potential for sustainable fashion in the country.

Opportunity

Dr Okai-Mensah described waste as not only a vulnerable resource posing a public health risk, but a creative opportunity and a social lifeline.

“Textile waste, especially when improperly disposed of, contributes to clogged drains, poor air quality through burning and harbouring of disease vectors.

"These risks disproportionately affect low-income communities where waste management infrastructure is lacking,” she added.

Educational

Dr Okai-Mensah further said that the project was deeply educational as students would be taught to redesign waste into bags, accessories and homeware—blending art, science and business.

“More importantly, they gain awareness of the health implications of improper waste disposal and the importance of sustainable choices", she said.

Renowned fashion expert, Beatrice “Bee” Arthur, also emphasised the importance of sustainability and innovation in the textile industry.

“At the end of the day, we are not just reclaiming textiles, we are reclaiming our future.

A big thank you to all our partners," she said.
