MoFA presents 320 bags of fertiliser to South Tongu farmers
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has presented 320 bags of fertiliser to farmers in the South Tongu Municipality in the Volta Region.
The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Setor Dumelo, presented the package to the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Tongu, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, who made a strong case for the fertilisers for the municipality, a vibrant community involved in farming, fishing and trading.
Speaking at a brief ceremony last Wednesday to present the bags of fertiliser at Kpotame, near the Municipal capital, Sogakope, Mr Dumelo, who is also the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, praised the South Tongu lawmaker for his dedication to his constituents and urged young people to take agriculture seriously.
“Farming is a business with real profit potential,” the Deputy Minister, a farmer, said.
“The youth must seize these opportunities and drive Ghana’s agricultural transformation,” Mr Dumelo, a strong advocate of youth in agriculture, added.
The event attracted farmers, opinion leaders, and members of the local assembly, all eager to witness this intervention aimed at boosting crop yields and enhancing food security.
For his part, Mr Lukutor applauded the government’s policy of resetting the economy through strategic agricultural investments.
“This is not just the usual politics,” he said, adding, "Today, we are seeing reality — and the people of South Tongu are direct beneficiaries.”
The South Tongu MP also thanked Mr Dumelo and the President for giving agriculture the attention it deserved.
The ceremony concluded with farmers thanking both leaders for their collective effort in delivering essential inputs to the constituency, promising to use the fertiliser effectively.
Mr Dumelo later visited several farms in the constituency, including a 12-acre cowpea and cassava farm owned by the South Tongu MP.
Background
In July this year, the Daily Graphic published a story in which MoFA had received 2,000 tonnes of fertiliser from the government of Morocco to be freely distributed to farmers to support the national agricultural efforts.
It was one of the outcomes of a two-day working visit to Morocco by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in early June this year.
Following the arrival of the consignment, MoFA allocated 40,000 bags of fertilisers to eight regions and constituencies across the country.
The beneficiary regions and constituencies are the Volta Region, 20,000 bags; the Oti Region, 10,000 bags; the Peasant Farmers Association, 5,000 bags; the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, 1,000 bags; the Afram Plains North and South constituencies, 1,000 bags each; the Jirapa Constituency, 500 bags; the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency, 1,000 bags, and the Bia West Constituency, 500 bags.
Additionally, the ministry allocated fertilisers to the Upper East, Upper West, North East, and Savannah regions.
