A police task force from the Volta Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTD) on Wednesday (July 29) carried out an operation to clamp down on the use of unapproved lamps, sirens and horns on the Peki-Asikuma stretch of the Eastern Corridor road.
The Regional MTTD Commander, Chief Superintendent Benedicta Akpene Ansah, briefing the Daily Graphic, said at the at the end of the exercise, 25 vehicles and two motor bikes were intercepted in the Peki area.
She said 27 unproved lamps, and one siren were removed from the vehicles and confiscated.
Chief Superintendent Ansah said the motorists were sensitised to Regulation 65 and 74 of LI 2180 (Regulation 2012) which forbade the use of such accessories on vehicles without lawful authority.
“For that matter, no driver or rider was arrested during the exercise,” she explained.
The regional MTTD commander said the drivers were also warned against driving on the shoulders of the road.
Juapong
In a related development on the same day, the police task force held a similar exercise in Juapong, in the North Tongu District, and seized 61 unapproved horns, 36 lamps after intercepting 36 vehicles, 25 motorbikes on the road.
Chief Superintendent Ansah said a total of 88 unapproved lamps were removed from 61 vehicles and 27 motorbikes intercepted in the two exercises.
Ho
In the first week of July, this year, MTTD personnel in Ho, in collaboration with National Road Safety Authority, impounded 34 tricycle taxies, and 28 vehicles in the regional capital for the unauthorised use of strobe lamps and sirens.
All the unauthorised lamps and sirens were seized by the team during the exercise, which took place largely in front of the Ho Teaching Hospital and the frontage of the Volta Regional Police Headquarters.
The offenders were cautioned by the team against the use of those accessories.
