NCCE holds parliamentary candidates dialogue in Upper Manya Krobo

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has held a Parliamentary Candidates Dialogue for Parliamentary Candidates (PC) for the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency in the Eastern Region.

The NCCE, based on its mandate “to formulate, implement and oversee programmes intended to inculcate in the citizens of Ghana awareness of their civic responsibility and an appreciation of their right as free people”, organised the dialogue in collaboration with the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) to promote peaceful election in the constituency.

The theme was: “Together, We Can Build Ghana: So Get Involved”. The dialogue was held at the Church of Pentecost Central Assembly in Asesewa in the Upper Manya Krobo Municipality last Tuesday.

The dialogue was centred on five thematic areas: Education, Health, Roads and Infrastructure, Economy and Agriculture. It aimed to foster constructive engagement among parliamentary candidates, as well as promote unity among the political parties to further help ease the political tension among the political party faithful in the constituency.

Some dignitaries who graced the occasion were the NCCE Eastern Regional Director, Ophelia Ankrah; the NCCE Deputy Eastern Regional Director, Augustus Bosrotsi; the NCCE Upper Manya District Director, Eric K. Yanney and the Member of Parliament and NDC PC, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko.

Others were the District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Mensah; the Zango Chief, Alhaji Mustapha and other traditional leaders.

Speaking at the event, the NCCE District Director, Eric Yarney, called on political parties to promote peace and encourage their members to maintain decent political language that fosters unity.

Mr Yarney indicated that peace in the country must be paramount to every stakeholder, including the electorate. This, he said, would help prevent violence in the district.

He underscored the importance of the dialogue, stating that it offered a platform where the interest groups in the elections told the constituents about their plans for the district’s development and committed to violent-free elections.

Development

The MP for the Upper Manya Krobo Constituency, Mr Nyarko, urged his supporters to remain calm and be law-abiding in the election period to promote security in the constituency for development, beyond the December polls.

He stated that the NDC was committed to a peaceful process and would not act in any way to endanger the peace in the district, as it was very necessary for the development of the constituency.

On his plans for the constituency, Mr Nyarko said the NDC would invest in completing the E-Block in the constituency to create the avenue for increased enrolment.

He also pledged his support for free SHS education and promised to establish agencies that will collaborate with the traditional authorities to give guidance and direction to students regarding the selection of courses of study at the senior high school level.

Health, infrastructure

On issues relating to health and infrastructure in the district, Mr Nyarko indicated that he would collaborate with the health directorate in the district to equip CHPS compounds to improve quality health delivery, among others.

The District Police Commander, Supt. Mensah, appealed to the youth not to let politicians lure them to engage in electoral violence, as the consequences were dire.

He urged the youth not to stay out of voting during the December polls as the result of current happenings in the country, but rather come out to vote to elect the leader of their choice.
