Madina to host 2026 Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup as 16 Zongo teams battle for glory
Madina will host this year’s Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the Madina Astro Turf, organisers of the annual tournament have announced.
The announcement was made during the launch and draw for the 11th edition of the competition in Accra, where Madina was unveiled as the host community. The decision makes Madina the fourth Zongo community to host the prestigious tournament since it was introduced in 2015.
Previous editions have been staged at the Wembley Park in Kotobabi, the Fadama Astro Turf and the well-known Kawokudi Park in Nima. This year’s event will see Madina welcome 15 other Zongo communities for what organisers describe as a day of exciting football fixtures.
Sabon Zongo, the only team to have participated in every edition of the competition, will open the tournament against Nsawam. Host side Madina will feature in the third match of the day when they take on Shukura as they begin another campaign to reclaim the trophy, having won the competition once before.
Among the standout fixtures, record three-time champions Ashaiman will face Anyaa Zongo in match eight, while defending champions Adabraka will begin the defence of their title against Ashale Botwe.
Speaking at the launch of the 11th edition, Dr Abubakar Marzuq, who represented the National Chief Imam, conveyed Sheikh Sharubutu’s goodwill message to participating communities and the youth of the various Zongo areas.
The Chief Imam urged those participating and the fans to continue to uphold the values of the competition, which seeks to bring the youth together through football, to promote peace, unity and discipline.
The Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup, held annually at the end of Ramadan, is named in honour of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.
Since the competition began, several Zongo communities across the country have taken part. However, only six communities — Ashaiman, Kasoa, Nima, Mamobi, Madina and Adabraka — have lifted the trophy.
Attention will now turn to whether one of the previous champions will reclaim the title or if a new community will emerge as winners in this year’s tournament.
