OHCS inaugurates crèche facility for staff
The Office of the Head of the Civil Service (OHCS) has inaugurated a crèche facility to support staff, particularly nursing mothers, in Accra.
The facility aims to ease the burden on working parents while providing a safe and nurturing environment for their wards.
The crèche facility is designed with child safety and development in mind. It includes a study room equipped with modern learning materials and a fully furnished kitchen to support the care and well-being of the children.
Initiative
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Head of the Civil Service, Dr Evans Aggrey-Darkoh, stated that the crèche facility, established under the Civil Service Employees’ Assistance Programme (CSEAP), complemented the recently launched counselling services introduced in July.
According to him, both initiatives were part of broader efforts to create a supportive work environment where staff feel valued, heard and empowered to perform at their best.
Dr Aggrey-Darkoh also acknowledged the contributions of Eunice Osae, former Chief Director of OHCS and the Country Director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), whose vision and support helped bring the project to fruition.
Commendation
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Child Rights International (CRI), Bright Appiah, praised the Civil Service for the initiative.
He emphasised that such programmes reflected a public sector that placed people at the centre of its operations and recognised that productivity was linked to the adoption of family-friendly policies.
Mr Apphiah encouraged other ministries, departments and agencies to emulate the example by establishing similar facilities in their workplaces to support their staff and ensure the safety of their children.
The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, in a speech read on her behalf by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Vera Karikari Bediako, commended the OHCS for the initiative.
Dr Momo Lartey affirmed that the facility aligned directly with the ministry’s mission, “to safeguard the welfare of children, promote gender equality and provide social protection for all”.
She emphasised that investing in children should not be seen as an act of charity but as a strategic move to secure the country’s future.
