PURC resolves 92.66% utility complaints in Northern Region

The Northern Regional Office of the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has resolved 202 out of 218 complaints received in the first quarter of 2026. 

This figure represents 92.66 per cent of all cases reported against utility service providers in the region.

The complaints were lodged against the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL), with electricity-related issues forming the bulk of reported cases.

Of the total complaints, NEDCo accounted for 197 cases, while GWL recorded 21.

Also, NEDCo resolved 187 of its cases, representing a 94.92 per cent resolution rate, while GWL resolved 15 cases, tran  slating to 71.43 per cent.

 Overall, the Commission achieved a Complaint Resolution Success Index (CRSI) of 8.80 for NEDCo and 6.40 for GWL.

Complaints categories

In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Tamale, the Northern Regional Manager of PURC, Seth Kponyo, said that the performance recorded in the quarter reflected sustained efforts to protect consumers and enforce accountability within the utility sector.


He indicated that quality of service-related issues dominated, followed by billing and metering-related complaints.

He added that 176 of the complaints were direct submissions to the Commission, while 42 were reported through third parties or institutional channels.

He said NeDCO recorded 157 direct complaints and 40 reported cases, while GWL recorded 19 direct complaints and 2 reported cases.

Financial adjustments and recoveries

Mr Kponyo indicated that one customer benefitted from a billing adjustment amounting to GH¢35,910.80.

He said the commission also facilitated revenue recoveries for NEDCo totalling GH¢74,541.01 for the period under review, adding that the commission had intensified its monitoring and complaint resolution mechanisms to improve service delivery by utility providers in the region.
