Rotary Club supports La Yahoshua School

The Rotary Club of Accra, Labone, has handed over four renovated washrooms to the La Yahoshua Basic School, Labone.

The renovation, worth GHC100,000, was in partnership with the Rotary clubs of Pleasanton and Piedmont Montclair — all in the United States (US).

The four washrooms, two for teachers and two for the students come with flush toilets, sinks, sanitiser dispensers, and a connected borehole water system to ensure hygiene.

Keys

The keys to the washrooms were handed over to the headmaster of the school, Raymond Konney, at a ceremony last Thursday.

More than 200 students are expected to benefit from the facility.

The club also handed over mathematical sets to final-year students of the school who are set to write their Basic Education Certificate Examination from June 9 to 16, 2025.

The President of the Rotary Club of Accra, Labone, Frank Owusu Adjei, told the Daily Graphic that the initiative was part of the club’s ongoing commitment to improving water and sanitation as well as disease prevention within its immediate environment.

He said the club had earlier handed over a library and an information, communication and technology laboratory to the students as part of its relationship with the school.

“This school has been adopted by our club, and for the past five years, we have tried to execute projects aimed at enhancing the educational environment,” he stated.

To guarantee the longevity of this facility, Mr Adjei said the Rotary Club would assist the school for the next three months with maintenance and the establishment of a sanitation club.

The club, he said, would train students to manage the upkeep of the washroom, ensuring students had access to clean facilities.

On the club’s plans, he revealed that his team was working towards raising funds to complete the renovation of the school block next year, which will include painting and general improvements.

Gratitude

For his part, the headmaster of the school, Mr Konney, expressed gratitude to the club members for their ongoing support.

He disclosed that since his tenure began in 2016, the club had collaborated with the school’s management to identify and address the needs of the school, leading to equipping them with an ICT centre and a library.

“With the Rotary Club's assistance, these facilities have been revitalised and have helped to improve teaching and learning outcomes,” he said.

He made a further appeal to the club to help with the renovation of other facilities.

Mr Konney urged the students to develop a mindset of care that extended beyond the school environment to their homes.
