Speaker inaugurates Awudome Traditional Council office at Anyirawase - Calls for sustained efforts to impart cultural values in children

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has inaugurated the Awudome Traditional Council office at Anyirawase in the Ho West District in the Volta Region with a call on chiefs and parents to constantly impart cultural and traditional values in children.

“Culture is worth more than gold and oil,” he said.

The Speaker expressed concern over how some children were drifting away from their roots and national identity because they were not connected to the customs of the land.

He pointed out that no nation had ever developed by despising its cultural heritage and imitating other nations.

Chieftaincy

Touching on chieftaincy, Mr Bagbin said the wisdom of traditional institutions had contributed significantly to the country’s development over the decades.

He maintained that contrary to the parochial views of some people, chieftaincy went far beyond regalia and served as a binding force that held the people together for many years.

That also accounted for why Ghana was peaceful in West Africa, the Speaker added.

“Chiefs are able to settle disputes before they became national crisis,” he added.

Mr Bagbin commended the chiefs, queens and people of Awudome for preserving their sterling cultural identity and said the traditional council office would definitely lift the area to greater heights of progress.

The Paramount Chief of Awudome, Togbega Addai Kwasi Dzani XIII, said the Awudome Traditional Council office building, completed almost 70 years after the foundation stone was laid, stood as a symbol of unity and authority in the traditional area.

The building was designed by the Member of Parliament of the area (Ho West), Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, who was present at the ceremony.

Classroom block

Meanwhile, the Speaker cut the sod for the construction of an eight-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at the Anyirawase E.P. DA Basic School.

“This is what I can do in return for your generosity towards me,” he said.

Mr Bagbin gave an assurance that the project would be completed before the end of this year.

Present was the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu.

The event was chaired by the Paramount Queen of Awudome, Mamaga Adomwaa Nani II.

The Speaker was enstooled Togbe Nutefeworla Awudome I.
