Stage performance of ‘The Generous Hunter’ play thrills, inspires JHS students
A captivating stage performance of “The Generous Hunter” brought literature to life for Ghanaian students, fostering a deeper appreciation for storytelling and critical thinking.
The event, held at the Word of Faith Christian School auditorium in Dodowa, was aimed at enhancing students' understanding of literature through drama.
It provided an interactive learning experience, allowing students to engage with the material dynamically. Before the performance, students eagerly shared their expectations, with many hoping to see the story come alive beyond the pages of their textbooks.
Their enthusiasm was met with an engaging and well-executed production that exceeded expectations.
Story, performance
One of the short stories in The Cockcrow compilation, the Generous Hunter narrates the adventures of a kind-hearted hunter called Asempa and how he was able to redeem his image after some individuals tried to destroy his reputation out of greed and jealousy.
The moral of the story, among others, showed how it pays to be kind to others and be truthful, having integrity and preserving it rather than chasing wealth wrongly, as well as being rewarded for doing good or being punished for doing bad.
Performed by a talented cast under the direction of the Chief Executive of “The Glory of God” (GOG) Theatre Company, Godwin Adom Awador, the cast played out the story so strongly with their stagecraft, leaving a lasting impression on students, helping them visualise and connect with the story they had studied in class.
An interactive session after the play provided students an opportunity to analyse and discuss key themes from the play, which was facilitated by Michael Rexford Addo Carbonu, who commended their active participation and confidence in articulating their thoughts.
The performance reinforced the importance of boldness in learning, with Mr Addo Carbonu emphasising that “a fearful and shy student was always close to failure”, emphasising that confident learners were neither shy nor afraid.
Support
The initiative received support from various organisations, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana Education Service (GES), Greater Accra Regional Directorate of Education and Shai-Osudoku District Education Directorate.
