Sunyani SDA Hospital fund saves lives of 3 schoolgirls

A Charity Fund set up by the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Hospital at Fiapre near Sunyani has saved the lives of three school-girls who had complications after attempted unsafe abortions.

The 96-bed hospital established the fund to settle and provide free medical treatment for needy patients.

This came to light at the hospital's 2025 annual thanksgiving and fundraising service, held last Tuesday.

The Counsellor of the hospital, Joseph Adjei Boateng, stated that part of the fund was used to treat the victims to save them and their babies after they attempted unsafe abortions.

He said the hospital had adopted their babies and sponsored the victims to go back to school.

Mr Boateng said all the babies were in good condition and growing without any health issues.

Thanksgiving, awards

The programme was to thank God for the lives of the staff and quality healthcare delivery.

It was marked with musical performances, scripture reading, dancing and prayers, as well as raising funds for the hospital’s fund.

Additionally, the management of the facility presented awards and citations to some hardworking staff.

Unsafe abortions

Mr Boateng explained that the fund was mainly used to provide free meals for needy patients and their caregivers at the hospital.

"We are using the Charity Fund to finance critical issues," he said.

He stated that it was sad to see how needy patients and their relatives were struggling to settle their medical bills and feed themselves while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Also, he said some patients ran away from the hospital when they were unable to settle their medical bills.

Apart from the funds raised at the thanksgiving service, Mr Boateng indicated that support was also received from individuals, including staff of the hospital, institutions and associations and appealed to the public to donate to the fund to support needy patients.

No maternal deaths

The Administrator of the SDA Hospital, Enoch Nketia, said the hospital had not recorded any maternal mortality in the past four years.

"For the past four years, the hospital has not recorded any maternal mortality and for these reasons, we have to thank God," he said.

He explained that the hospital, which was established in 2005 with only four beds, now had 96 beds.

Mr Nketia said over the last 10 years, the hospital had attended to more than 730,000 patients.

Histopathology unit

The SDA Hospital Administrator further said the hospital had a histopathology lab, which, he said, was the only facility serving Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions.

Mr Nketia said before the establishment of the unit in 2023, patients had to travel to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi to access pathology services.

He said the unit provided services such as histopathology and cytology.
