USA couple donates playground to Porter’s Village

A Couple from the United States of America, Dr Santana M. Williams and his wife, Dr Kathen Y. Williams, as part of the celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary, donated a playground for the children in the Porter’s Village at Dodowa in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.

The benefactors also donated clothing and other items to the inmates of the home at a short ceremony at Dodowa on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Porter’s Village, founded by the late Dr Jane Irina Adu in early 2000, is a registered non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to providing care, shelter and support to orphaned and vulnerable children.

It is also aimed at giving abused women and their children a safe home in the Shai-Osudoku District and Ghana at large. It currently has 200 children that it supports, but 82 are in the Porter’s Village Home.

At the handing-over ceremony of the playground and other items to management, Dr Williams said he and his wife felt blessed and that they needed to extend their blessings to the needy and vulnerable in society, especially the orphans and vulnerable children who were brought together at the Porter’s Village by the late founder, Dr Mrs Adu, for their safety.

He said it was also because of their love for the children that, through a donation from Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in 2023, the couple donated a borehole, IT and toilet facilities to the same beneficiaries.

Give back to society

The wife, Dr (Mrs) Williams, for her part, was full of praise for the management of the village and the quality of care they had been providing to the children.

She said they came to Ghana purposely to celebrate their 30th anniversary of their wedding ceremony and also used the opportunity to give back to society, hence the playground for the children.

‘’We started in 2023 with a borehole, shower facilities, information technology facilities, and the continuation is what we have done today by providing the children with a playground to make them happy anytime they play.

“These kids have opportunities in future and we need to treat them well now, and so I, therefore, challenge all Ghanaians in the country and those in the diaspora to come and support the Porter’s Village in whatever way they can in the interest of the children and humanity’’, Dr (Mrs) Williams pleaded.

Mrs Williams, who, together with other visitors from the USA, interacted with the children, told them it did not matter how they started, but what would matter would be the way they would finish, adding, “dream big, work hard and trust God’’.

The Executive Director of TEAM CSR, a non-governmental organisation that partnered the donors,  Mr Jonathan Akuamoah, advised the management of the village to ensure they maintained the facility to make it last longer, as our maintenance culture in the country is not the best.

The Executive Director of the Porter’s Village, Nana Ama Owusu, was grateful to Mr and Mrs Williams for their generosity.

She said the importance of the playground to the children could not be overemphasised because a healthy body makes a sound mind, and the playground has a crucial role to play in the development of the children.
