GIMPA begins BADEA-sponsored programme

The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) has selected the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) to train public sector workers for effective delivery of government business.
The bank has provided $61,000 under a $125,000 technical cooperation agreement with the Ghana Government for logistical support and training programmes for the public sector.

GIMPA is expected to handle the local training component of the programme, while the South African Management Institute will serve as the centre for the external training programmes.

Local component

The local programme involves the training of staff in negotiation skills, budgeting and financial management for public sector report writing, management of public procurement and monitoring and evaluation.

According to Professor Samuel Bonsu, the acting Dean of the GIMPA School of Public Service and Governance, the first programme, involving a selected group of public officials at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, had already been held, while a series of such refresher workshops would be held at the school.

Opening the second in the series of refresher courses, Prof. Bonsu underlined the importance of refresher courses, particularly for public sector operators who were constantly confronted by changing trends in governance and government business.

He said the programme had selected modules that would make the participants relevant and enable them to institute changes within their spheres of operation to ensure effective delivery of services.

“One way of making this programme worthy and useful is for you to act as change elements within your organisations to make Ghana the ultimate beneficiary of your services,” he told the participants.

Appreciation

Prof Bonsu was grateful that for the first time BADEA was using a local institute for such a programme and was hopeful the bank would be satisfied with its performance and ultimately create one of its training hubs in Ghana, just like the East Africa Management Institute (ESMAMI) in Arusha, Tanzania.
