The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has pledged to continue its support for efforts to turn the Museum of Science and Technology (MST), an arm of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), into an internationally viable  institution in the advancement of science and technology.

The MST recently held its first exhibition of indigenous industrial technology in Accra and GNPC was the key sponsor of the event.

Speaking on behalf of the GNPC at the  exhibition, Ms Linda Tamakloe, said museums have a particularly important role to play in creating a scientific national culture.

According to her, by gathering and properly showcasing the artefacts that embody our productive and problem-solving history, museums build self-awareness and confidence in our youth.

Institutions that took part in the exhibition included the College of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Kumasi, Takoradi, Accra and Koforidua polytechnics.

She pointed out that the development of scientific excellence had been the passion of the GNPC since its establishment 30 years ago and that the outfit whole-heartedly supported the MST at its attempt to help provide a culture from which professional scientific excellence would emerge.

Recalling GNPC’s relations with the KNUST, University of Ghana and the University of Mines and Technology, Ms Tamakloe said it illustrated their commitment  to science promotion and also explained why they had voted resources to help actualise the science museum.

Ms Tamakloe urged other corporate institutions interested in the promotion of science and technology for national  progress to also rally behind the science museum.

The Executive Director of GMMB, Dr Zagba Oyortey, thanked the GNPC for its help so far.

He said a science museum worth its name could not be built with public funds alone and asked industrialists and other private investors to help institute a first-rate science museum in the country.

He commended the general staff of GMMB for working hard to make the outfit relevant to the nation.
