Government commits to ideals of UN

The government has re-affirmed its commitment to the ideals of the United Nations (UN) and has assured of implementing Ghana’s Agenda for Transformation within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by member nations in September this year for the benefit of Ghanaians.

The SDGs were adopted at the UN General Assembly and are aimed at building viable and sustainable economies that can transform lives, particularly that of Africans.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Hanna Tetteh, said this in a speech read on her behalf at a press briefing in Accra to celebrate the 70th United Nations Day.

She said the government was determined to build a robust and transformative economy where industry and reliable energy supply, with matching infrastructure would become an enduring foundation for development.

SDGs

Ms Tetteh said in pledging its commitment at the United Nations Special Summit for the adoption of the SDGs, President John Mahama had said: “I will continue to aggressively, and with dynamism, implement our country’s Agenda for Transformation within the framework of the newly adopted SDGs in order to build a life of dignity that ensures no one is left behind.”

She said a strong Ghana, working in concert with a strong United Nations, would certainly give hope for a better world.

Ms Tetteh said the SDGs were of universal application, with flexibility for different national realities, capacities, priorities and levels of development.

Achievements

For her part, the UN Resident Coordinator to Ghana, Ms Christine Evans-Klock, said the 70th anniversary of the UN was a timely opportunity to highlight its many and enduring achievements and to strengthen the collective resolve to do more to promote peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

“Every day, the UN makes a positive difference for millions of people: vaccinating children, distributing food aid, sheltering refugees, deploying peacekeepers, protecting the environment, seeking the peaceful resolution of disputes and supporting democratic elections, gender equality, human rights and the rule of law,” she said.

She said the challenges of the times transcended borders and required complex solutions through negotiations and compromises.
